Did you ever wonder how to start a business? What steps you would need to take and how to approach certain issues. Start Your Own Hair Salon and Day Spa by Doug Sandlin got down to each step in detail. Before even starting a business you will need to decide things like where the best location is and who the target audience will be. This book could even help a salon in trouble to figure out what they're doing wrong and fix it before it's too late.
The book starts out listing off the things you'll need to do, just to get you prepared. Then each chapter after that focuses on a specific area that you will need to work on before opening the salon. It goes into great detail and even tells you right down to where to get certain things and the right lawyer for you. It'll help you decide the right type of company you want to run and even the right name for your salon. It tells you how to gather market research to decide what the right area and location is for your dream salon and even what type of building you would want your salon to be a part of.
This helped me immensely with quite a few things. It helped me decide what types of classes I'd need to take in college and even helped me decide that I might want to minor in marketing. They broke everything down for me and sometimes it was a little confusing, but I just went over it a few times until I understood it. When I first started reading the book, I started to become concerned, 'is this really what I want to do?' After reading this, it put a lot of things in perspective for me. Maybe I'm not so sure about what I want to do. I should explore other options too before deciding my future at 18 years of age.
When I was reading this, I kind of stopped and took a look at a section of the book. It was the money. I had no idea that salon owners made so little, I felt ignorant and this is what made me think twice about this career path. If it's something I really want to do and my heart is set on it then I don't care about the money, but obviously my heart isn't so set on it. I need to see what else is out there, maybe there's something I haven't even heard of yet that I would be passionate about or really want to do. This book makes you think and I'm glad it did.
The money issue bothered me a lot. It made me not even want to read the rest of the book anymore, it was frustrating. I figured I would still give this a shot and found that I wasn't as interested if there isn't more money involved.
The book had a few random tips on the side that I thought were very helpful. That's where you would get the information on where to register your taxes for your salon and such.
Overall I realized that I need to reevaluate what I want to do when I get older. I can't choose a field to go into for the rest of my life if I'm not sure it's what I want to do. The book was very informative and helped me out a lot. It made me think of things that I would never have even thought of before. I am very glad that I read this before starting to open a salon. It would have been disastrous to open a salon and then realize that's not what I really wanted. This book stopped me from having to do that.
